white Paintings

The series of white paintings started in 2004 as an isolated body of work. It consisted of acrylic and resin on jute-covered wooden panels, with deep incised lines breaking the painting surface. The images were unrestricted and ranged from figurative to abstract and non-objective. With time, some of the white paintings evolved into larger colored painting series. This series remains ongoing and continues to develop alongside other series of work.

Robbins continued to revisit certain painting series during the last decade that launched various new bodies of paintings. Particularly, the White Painting have been a favorite arena to try out new images and reflections on his art practice. Because the White Paintings have a full range of images from figuration to the non-objective, it has become a repository for invention and a safe space to try out new ideas. The White Paintings act also as a nursery where many of the paintings from the newer series have started from. Similarly, the Wall works have inspired many spin off series, such as the wall drawings, wall paintings as well as the Grid paintings and drawings.

The artist’s graphic work of painting on paper also has resurrected older themes during his studio practice of working on various drawings simultaneously over a period of months and sometimes years. This process is very fluid and sometimes gives the artist the sense that the works are making themselves through a process of one work dictating and inspiring the next piece.
